AN OLD BUILDING REVIVED
My name is Janie Ahner, and I’m the owner and operator of Sandusky Book Bar.
This endeavor started sometime around December of 2022 when I jokingly mentioned that I wanted to use some of the space in the old YMCA building for my dream bookstore (and truly, what goes better with a book than a coffee or a drink?).
For context, my family and I own the building that formerly housed the YMCA on Perkins Ave in Sandusky, Ohio. My brothers have owned and operated their business, Ahner Commercial Doors & Windows, out of the building for a couple of years, but that only takes up so much space in such a large building.
So because the space was free and I had this little dream, I decided to turn it into a reality!
‘IT’S A BOOKSTORE, TOO?’
I know, right?
Feel free to come in and browse, read while you’re here, or buy a book to take with you!
We have a few thousand books on our shelves, in nonfiction genres from cookbooks to memoirs to history, to fiction genres like contemporary, romance, thrillers, and we have shelves and shelves of books for all ages of kiddos.
We take book donations and have primarily used books, but we do also have new books from local authors!
Used book donations: Once we receive a book, we review it for condition (and find a new home for the books in especially poor condition, e.g. mold, water damage, ripped pages), put it into a genre and give it a price based on condition, popularity, and age of the book. All of our used books are priced at a 50-90% discount from retail price. Generally, we match the lowest price that you can find online.
New books by local authors: We price these at the list price determined by the author. Once a book sells, the author keeps a large cut, while the store gets a small cut for stocking the book. if you’re a local author looking for a home for your book, give us a shout!
If there’s a certain genre or author you’d like to see, email janie@sanduskybookbar.com and we’ll see what we can do! We may have a copy laying around somewhere.
